Misal pav is a tasty Maharashtrian breakfast dish. Misal is a spicy masala curry made up of roasted onion, tomato, and dry coconut. It is a healthy and stomach-filling breakfast. We can even have it for lunch or dinner.
Wash and Soak moth beans/matki in ample water for 5-6 hours.
Drain water and tie it in a cotton cloth overnight.
The next morning matki is ready for misal.
Masala for misal:
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add onion slices to it. Saute for 5-7 minutes on medium flame.
Add garlic cloves slices and 2 tablespoons of grated coconut to it. Saute for 2-3 minutes.
Now add chopped tomato to it and saute for 2 minutes. Turn off the flame. Transfer it to a plate.
Let it cool. Transfer this roasted masala to a grinder jar. Grind it for a minute.
Add ½ cup of water to it and grind it again into a smooth paste.
How to make misal:
Heat 3-4 tablespoons of oil in the same pan. Add 2 teaspoons of red chili powder, 2 teaspoons of garam masala and ¼th teaspoon of turmeric to it. Saute for a minute. Don’t burn the spices.
Now add the ground masala to it and mix it well. Let it cook for 7-8 minutes on a medium flame by stirring occasionally.
Once the masala is cooked, it starts releasing little oil. Now add 5 cups of water and matki to it, and let it boil on high flame.
Once the water starts boiling, turn the flame to low and let it boil for 10-12 minutes
Add chopped coriander to it. And turn off the flame.
Assembling / serving misal:
Take a serving bowl. Add a ladle full of misal/cooked matki without curry in it.
Add finely chopped onion and farsan on it.
Now add curry and chopped coriander.
Serve the hot misal with pav.
