Upma is a famous Indian breakfast. It is a quick, healthy and delicious breakfast recipe. I make upma for breakfast many times, as it is very easy and tasty.
Upma is made up of rava or semolina, green chili, onion and tomato. To make upma we need to roast rava first. For a perfect upma recipe always use hot water in a recipe. Also the quantity of water should be 3 parts of rava. If we are using 1 cup of rava, use 3 cups of hot water for it.

- 1 cup Rava/ semolina
- 1 tablespoon Peanuts
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
- 4-5 Curry leaves
- 2 Green chilies
- 1 Onion
- 1 Tomato
- 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
- Coriander
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat a pan. Add rava to it. Roast it on low flame till it turns a little crispy and dry. it will take approx 5-8 minutes.
- In the same pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil. Add peanuts to it. fry them until they turn a little crispy. keep fried peanuts aside.
- Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, curry leaves, chopped green chili and onion to it. Also add salt to taste and mix it well.
- when onion turns pinkish in color and chili, curry leaves turn crispy. Add chopped tomato to it.
- Cook the tomato for a minute. then add roasted rava to it. Also, add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and fried peanuts to it. Mix it well.
- Add 3 cups of hot water to it. And stir continuously until the water gets absorbed by the rava. It will increase in size after absorbing water.
- Add chopped coriander to it. Cover for a minute.
- Mix it well. And serve hot upma for breakfast.
Notes
- We can add peas, carrots and beans in this recipe to make veg upma.
- We can roast rava prior and use it as per requirement.
